Meet this week’s “Special Person of the Week: Breanna Lungo-Koehn
In 2001, Breanna Lungo-Koehn decided it was time to take a stand for people who were not being represented effectively in Medford. Despite the long odds and discouragement from insiders, she ran for city council – and won a seat at the age of 21, at that time serving as the youngest city councilor in Medford’s history.
Like everything Breanna commits to, she gave her all to the campaign. She worked tirelessly learning about what was important to Medford residents and hand-delivered almost 50,000 brochures to share her platform with Medford alongside her father.
Breanna took office in 2001 and has been fighting for the residents of Medford ever since. In her early years on the Council, Breanna became a voice for girls and youth in the city. Her leadership led to the first Medford High School Girl’s Hockey Team. She fought for the Park League Program, creating vital city parks activity during the long summer months. She also fought to make sure the Make Way for Kids program was funded to create opportunities for the next generation of kids. Breanna also served as a Big Brother Big Sister mentor, offering support to a young woman at the most crucial time in her life and learning more about the struggles kids face today.
Re-elected to the City Council eight times, Breanna has fought for the collective good of Medford residents earning a reputation for integrity and independence. She has stood up for our neighborhoods, fought for transparency and accountability, and battled to make sure our children, families, veterans and seniors have the best opportunities possible. Breanna also served on the Medford Disability Commission for many years, ensuring persons with disabilities enjoy full participation in society free from unnecessary barriers.
In 2008, Breanna’s hard work and determination led to her election as President of the City Council. Breanna’s family and upbringing have left a lasting imprint on her values and work ethic. Breanna’s father, Edward, was a local businessman, and her mother Susan was a school secretary. The family business in Wellington Circle selling flowers and Christmas Trees put them at the center of the community. Medford politics was a common topic of conversation at her childhood dinner table. Breanna learned about how the city worked, and how important it was to care, work hard, never give up, and always fight for what’s right.
Breanna graduated from Medford High School and received a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Psychology from Endicott College in Beverly where she graduated Alpha Phi Sigma.
Breanna had originally wanted to be in law enforcement. She took – and passed – the police exam but she ultimately decided to help people using the law to stand up for people’s rights. In 2006, she graduated from Massachusetts School of Law with her Juris Doctor degree.
Breanna opened her own legal practice in Medford in 2009 after working for a Boston law firm. She specializes in Family Law, Personal Injury, and Estate Planning.
Breanna met her husband, David in 2003. Breanna and David have three children Bayley, age 11, Kaliway, age 8, and Kody, age 5. Bayley will be starting at the Mcglynn Middle School in September, 2019. Kaliway and Kody attend the Roberts Elementary School.
David is a small business owner, Boston Physical Therapy & Wellness, in Medford and a board member of the Medford Chamber of Commerce.
Breanna and David are keen athletes, and both coach several youth sports teams in the city. Breanna is also active with Girls on the Run, an organization that builds confidence in diverse groups of young women through training for a 5k. She has also been active with Portal to Hope, a non-profit that helps victims of domestic violence.
Now with 18 years’ experience in city government, often required to serve a role as the checks and balances on inadequate process or insufficient transparency and accountability, Breanna wants to do more. She is bringing the same drive to her campaign for Mayor of Medford as she has throughout her career, hard work, listening, putting Medford first. Just as a new perspective was needed on the City Council almost two decades ago.
On November 5, 2019, Breanna won the mayoral election and is the 32nd Mayor of Medford.
